There is or There are?
Hay
Usamos la estructura "hay...." para simplemente decir que algo existe o no existe.
1. Usamos la forma ‘there is + a/an’ con sustantivos en singular. ¡Ojo! Cuando el sustantivo sea incontable, no podrá llevar delante ‘a/an’ como ves en el segundo ejemplo.
Examples: Ejemplos:
There is an orange on the desk. Hay una naranja sobre el escritorio.
There is oil on the pavement. Hay aceite sobre la calzada
2. Usamos la forma ‘there are’ con sustantivos en plural:
Examples: Ejemplos:
There are 600 students in my school. Hay 600 estudiantes en mi colegio.
There are four chairs in the kitchen. Hay cuatro sillas en la cocina.
No hay
Para usar la forma negativa, y decir lo opuesto, utilizamos isn't (is not) o aren`t (are not).
Examples: Ejemplos:
There isn't a TV in the kitchen. No hay una televisión en la cocina.
There isn`t an orange on the table. No hay una naranja sobre la mesa.
There aren`t chairs in my bedroom. No hay sillas en mi habitación.
There aren´t two tables in the classroom. No hay dos mesas en la clase.
¿Hay?
Para hacer preguntas, sólo debes alterar el orden de ‘’there is’’ and ‘’there are’’.
Examples: Ejemplos:
Is there a pen in your bag? ¿Hay un bolígrafo en tu mochila?
Yes, there is. Sí, hay.
No, there isn`t. No, no hay.
Are there two windows in this room? ¿Hay dos ventanas en esta habitación?
Yes, there are. Sí, hay.
No, there aren`t. No, no hay.
